You're
familiar with the old written law, "Love your friend," and
its unwritten companion, "Hate your enemy." I'm challenging
that. I'm telling you to love your enemies. Let them bring
out the best in you, not the worst. When someone gives you
a hard time, respond with the energies of prayer, for then
you are working out of your true selves, your God-created
selves.
Here is a simple, rule-of-thumb guide for behavior: Ask yourself
what you want people to do for you, then grab the initiative
and do it for them. Add up God's Law and Prophets and this
is what you get.
You've observed how godless rulers throw their weight around.
When people get a little power, it quickly goes to their heads.
It's not going to be that way with you. Whoever wants to be
great must become a servant. Whoever wants to be first among
you must be your slave. That is what the Son of Man has done:
I came to serve, not to be served-and then to give away my
life.
